Find the company that hosts a website.
When your photo is on an independent site, the notice belongs with its host. Type the site’s address to see the host, the registrar and an abuse contact from public records.
How to use it
- Type
- The site’s address, not the address of the image
- You see
- The likely host, the registrar and an abuse contact
- Then
- Check the host’s agent in the Copyright Office directory
- Not for
- Social posts or listings, which have their own forms
Before you send
Three things the lookup cannot tell you.
- 1
Why the host, not the site owner
Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(c) a host keeps its legal protection by acting on a valid notice. The person running the site has no such incentive, and a message to them can simply prompt the photo to move. - 2
Platforms host themselves
For Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, X, TikTok or a marketplace, this lookup will only name the platform. Report there through its own copyright form. - 3
Where notices are actually accepted
DNS shows who serves a site, not where it takes notices. The Copyright Office’s directory of designated agents does, and a recipient need not act on a notice sent to the wrong place.
